CE Fellows Announced

Campus Engagement Fellows

Lawrence Tech is seeking two student volunteers to be Campus Engagement (CE) Fellows beginning in September 2009. These students, with the support of the Office of Leadership Programs staff, will engage the campus and the community in a two-part Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service event that addresses the needs of disadvantaged youth, mobilizes college students to become civically engaged citizens, and contributes to building a supportive infrastructure for civic engagement on campus.

Program Overview

The CE Fellows will work together to develop two major events related to MLK Day of Service. The first will be to engage with University High School to develop a service project that involves college students volunteering alongside high school students to better their campus or the surrounding Ferndale community. Additionally, the CE Fellows will demonstrate the creativity, innovation, planning, and cooperation that is required of leaders in hopes of their work leading to an annual activity.

Secondly, the CE Fellows will coordinate Lawrence Tech's recruitment and participation in the MLK Day of Service program in partnership with University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-D), Madonna University, Henry Ford Community College (HFCC), and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

Incentives

The CE Fellows will receive nearly $1,000 (with the possibility for an additional $500) to plan, organize, and execute Lawrence Tech's participation in the MLK Day of Service projects. All of their work on the project will be voluntary. However, the CE Fellows will receive free registration to the Service Leadership Camp (September) and Leadership Summit (February), reimbursement for all mileage, training, and supporting training materials. Training and coaching for the CE Fellows for planning and leadership will include seven sessions on site in Lansing provided by Michigan Campus Compact.

Commitment Requirements

The CE Fellows will:
* Attend Service Leadership Camp (September 18-20, 2009)
* Participate in all training sessions provided by MCC
* Attend all planning meetings at University of Michigan-Dearborn for the collaborative project
* Organize and attend all meetings with University High School and the United Way
* Actively recruit student participation in the MLK Day of Service projects
* Work collaboratively with the appointed Community Service Director for the project
* Have fun and maintain a commitment to service and student engagement

Background

The goal of the CE Fellows program is to provide logistical and programmatic training to develop new student leaders who can contribute to building a sustainable culture of service-learning and civic engagement on their campuses through the MLK Day of Service project. As such, all students who have a strong commitment to service, diversity, and leadership--regardless of previous experience--should apply.

The Campus Engagement Fellows program is supported by a grant from Michigan Campus Compact (MCC). Lawrence Tech is one of five Michigan universities who received the grant for the 2009-2010 academic year.
