RAYMOND W. GUNN:

Managing Director of Wingspan Partners L.L.C., a financial and management advisory firm with a venture fund in the pipeline. He is former CEO of Clarity Technologies Inc., a software firm, and a longtime tech industry leader in the Detroit area.

WHERE BORN: Detroit, at the new “Harper” Grace Hospital

MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSONS: “My mother and father. Everything I am in one fashion or another is based on their example, support, and influence.”

LAST BOOK READ: “I am keenly interested in the most influential entrepreneurs our recent world has ever known, our forefathers. I have read Adams by McCullough, Benjamin Franklin by Isaacson, 1776 by McCullough and Freedom: A History of Us by Joy Hakim. Additionally, I have read 50 Things That Really Matter and Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen, and I want to read Blink.”

WORDS THAT DESCRIBE ME: “Contagious enthusiasm, passion, determination, loyal, hard-working, tenacious, fair-minded, kind.”

WHERE MY FIELD/INDUSTRY IS HEADED: “If venture capital does not come to Michigan, our transition from an automotive-dominated economy will be exponentially longer. We desperately need to use all of our resources to invest in early-stage business opportunities, almost at all costs. It is where job growth will come from; it is what will be required to encourage our intellectual capital/talent from leaving the state; it is the only calculated bet we can make that will have an order of magnitude in payoff. It is by far the single most important ingredient missing from our economy today, "risk capital." Remedying this one variable will have countless benefits. Our leadership needs to understand this and more importantly needs to truly believe it and embrace it as the cornerstone of our future.”

FAVORITE TECHNOLOGICAL GADGET: “I live on my PC and email. I cannot believe how much I can get done in a day, how many people I can touch at a single moment. When you stop and think about this single tool, it is amazing in its reach and breadth. However, the downside is that some think it replaces human touch; nothing will ever replace being in front of one another, not even the proliferation of Webcasting. My Treo phone and my son's iPods are by far the most fun recent purchases.”

FAVORITE PLACE: “Besides my home with my children, I have a cottage in Garland, Mich., where I go with my children to golf in the summer and snowmobile in the winter. Also in my travels, I love Munich, Germany, and Lugano, Switzerland.”

FAVORITE HOBBY: “Golf, swimming, and snowmobiling with my kids.”

FAVORITE FOOD: “If my waistline would not respond negatively to pizza, I would eat it three times a day!”

MY HIDDEN TALENT: “Coaching. I played college basketball, but not until I coached three years of high school basketball in 1989-91 did I truly understand the game. I also studied human behavior like never before and have since made those lessons part of my management and parenting practices.”

HOW I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED: “I know I am blinded by my enthusiasm and passion but I also know I risk myself to deliver on my promises. I involve myself in things that are straight up the hill and require the heaviest lifting. I prefer to take on the most difficult challenges. I would like to be thought of as courageous, gentle, kind, thoughtful, and wise, a great friend, father and partner, an inspiration to others. These are the things I think about daily — am I easy to do things with, business, partnering, relations, etc.?”
