Health Insurance

It is University policy that all international students have health insurance.  LTU has a list of recommended health insurance programs.  Sometimes the terms can be confusing, so the following definitions may be helpful:

Obtain: Health insurance plans can be obtained in your home country or the United States.

Coverage: Health insurance must contain coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation.

Co-pay:  The amount that you will be required to pay each time you visit a doctor or fill a prescription.  Your co-pay will vary based on what insurance you purchase, but it will usually range from $5 - $30 USD.

Deductible:  Some insurance companies will only help cover costs if the total expense is over a certain amount.  For example, if your deductible is $300 and your total expense is $100 you will be required to pay the full $100.  However, if your total expense is $500, you will will pay your $300 deductible and the insurance company will pay the remaining $200.

Premium:  The cost of your insurance policy - be sure to check if it is a monthly or annual premium.

Pre-existing Condition:  A health condition that you had before you purchased your new health insurance.

Exclusion:  Your health insurance will not cover anything designated as an exclusion.
