Located in suburban Southfield, Michigan, Lawrence Tech is located approximately 30 miles northwest of downtown Detroit and the Canadian border. It is the hub of one of the nation's foremost business and industrial centers and close to entertainment, cultural, and recreational venues. Sports

Detroit is known for its fascination with sports of all kinds.  Professional basketball, baseball, football, hockey--Detroit has it all.

The Detroit Pistons basketball team plays at the Palace in Auburn Hills and the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions play at Comerica Park and Ford Field, located next to each other in downtown Detroit. 

As close neighbors of Canada, Detroiters have always been ice hockey fans.  Detroit is not only Motown, it is also Hockeytown.  The Detroit Red Wings play at Joe Louis Arena, located downtown near the Detroit River.

 

Museums and Cultural Institutions

The Detroit Institute of Arts, in Detroit's Midtown cultural center, recently reopened after an extensive renovation and showcases many famous works of art.

Located in Royal Oak, about five miles from campus, the Detroit Zoo is a great weekend excursion.  The animals are housed in realistic park-like settings along beautiful landscaped paths.

The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, located in Dearborn, highlight American history and culture and feature a huge outdoor working village and an IMAX theater.

The Motown Historical Museum is home to Motown's greatest musicians, of which include, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, the Jackson five, and many more. 

The Detroit Historical Society was founded in 1921 and is home to over 200,000 artifacts, shown through dynamic exhibits and experiences. 

Explore the Belle Isle Conservancy which include attractions like the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, aquarium, greenhouses, Dossin Great Lakes Museum, Nature Zoo, Detroit Yacht Club, Borreal Wetlands Forest, U.S. Coast Guard Station Belle Isle. 

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is the world's largest institution dedicated to the African American experience. Materials are compiled from the Blanche Coggin Underground Railroad Collection, Harriet Tubman Museum Collection, Coleman A. Young Collection and the Sheffield Collection. 

 

Theaters and Music Venues

The Fillmore Detroit is a beautiful historic venue that offers a unique concert experience. Affliated with the House of Blues, The Fillmore attracts famous musicians from around the U.S and recently hosted the 2012 Detroit Music Awards. 

Known as Detroit's crown jewel, the Fox Theater is one of the top-grossing theaters of its size in the nation. It has been host to some of the biggest names in show business, and has a wide-array of shows for all ages and genres. 

The Magic Stick has been host to The White Stripes, The National, Jack Johnson, Interpol, Kings of Leon, Mudhoney, Modest Mouse, The Kills, Sleigh Bells and Childish Gambino. It also offers an outdoor roof top patio, and side stage (Magic Stick Lounge).


In existence since 1887, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is home of a world class and community-supported orchestra. 

The Michigan Opera Theatre presents at the Detroit Opera House during the dance and opera season each year. 

Owned and operated by the Motor City Theatre Organ Society, the Redford Theater is home to a newly-renovated asian style venue. Enjoy an organ pre-performance, cartoon then the showing of a classic film. 

Looking for a night of laughs? Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle is the perfect place for you. Located in Royal Oak, Tim Allen got his start here. Regularly scheduled comedians take the stage and open mic night is offered Wednesday night.
