Biography

Dr. Donald D. Carpenter is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Lawrence Technological University.  Dr. Carpenter's institutional service includes serving as Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Assessment Program, Chair (and co-Founder) of Lawrence Technological University's Educational Innovation Collaborative (EIC), Director of the Hydraulics and Hydrogeology Laboratory, and Faculty Advisor for the American Society of Civil Engineering Student Chapter.  Dr. Carpenter has been involved in funded pedagogical research and development projects and has published and presented numerous educational papers. In addition to his publications, Dr. Carpenter has conducted faculty development workshops on topics such as the use of student learning objectives for curriculum improvement and assessment of student outcomes.  He is an active member of the Educational Research Methods Division of the American Society of Engineering Education, and he received both the 2001 Apprentice Faculty Grant and the 2002 New Faculty Fellow Award for his past contributions to and future impact on engineering education from that organization.  In 2004, Dr. Carpenter was selected as the Most Outstanding Faculty member at Lawrence Technological University.  Finally, Dr. Carpenter is a practicing water resource engineer whose specialties include urban stream restoration, coastal engineering, stormwater management, and watershed hydrology.

Personally, Dr. Carpenter is a lifelong outdoorsman and Eagle Scout who grew up in southeast Michigan.  He has paddled on every Great Lake except Ontario and has followed historic voyageur canoe routes across the Province of Ontario.  He is married with two young children.

Hydraulics Laboratory

A new Hydraulic Engineering Teaching Laboratory was established in the fall of 2002.  The laboratory includes a tilting open channel flume, a sediment transport flume, an advanced hydrology system, a sediment permeability apparatus, and other equipment.  The laboratory experience includes the study of open channel flow, closed conduit flow, culvert analysis, hydrology, sediment transport, groundwater flow, pump characteristics, and water resources.  This laboratory is arguably the best hydraulics teaching facility in the State of Michigan.
