Engineering Technology Quick Facts and FAQ

What is the difference between Engineering, Engineering Technology, and Technology?
This is the single most important question that you should ask. In Michigan, there are only four Universities that offer Engineering Technology degrees.
Engineering education involves extensive use of calculus in engineering theory classes, as well as related classes such physics and chemistry.
Engineering technology education involves studying of many of the same subjects, but the mathematics involved starts with algebra, and moves to applied courses in technical calculus and applied differential equations.
Technology education is not as heavily laden with mathematics or science.
Can I transfer from Engineering to Engineering Technology without losing my earned credits?
As long as you have maintained an acceptable grade point average, this is something that can be done.
How difficult is it for me to go into engineering if I have a technical associate degree from a local community college?
Unless you have been enrolled in a pre-engineering program, your chances are low. The problem involves the types of classes that you took at the community college. If the math, science, and theory are not calculus based, the credits will not transfer to a engineering degree.
What about transferring from a community college to Engineering Technology?
LTU has transfer agreements with most community colleges in the U.S. and Ontario. Most technical associate degrees will transfer with most credits being brought in to the BSET degree program. (Often, 64 credits can be transferred from a community college. In some cases, more credit can be transferred if it comes from a four-year university.)

An associate degree requires a minimum 64 credit hours to complete
A BSET requires a minimum of 125 credit hours to complete
A BSIM and BSTM require 121 credit hours to complete to complete
A BSCM requires a minimum of 125 credit hours to complete
The Engineering Technology department offers more degrees than any other department at LTU
The Engineering Technology department is located in the Engineering Department in office block E179
The BSET degree program is available from the Main Campus at LTU, as well as our Clarkston and Ford/Windsor locations
Our Windsor program is offered for Ford/Nemak employees only.
The Senior Project programs are offered through the Main Campus only.
