Dr. Patricia Shamamy, P. E., Professor of Mechanical Engineering, joined the faculty of Lawrence Technological University’s Mechanical Engineering Department in 1977.  Her academic interests include engineering materials, advanced applications of materials, and utilization of e-learning in engineering.  She received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Saint Joseph College in Connecticut, a Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and a Ph. D. in the Management of Engineering and Technology from Southern California University. 

At LTU, Dr. Shamamy is the coordinator for the Introduction to Engineering, the Engineering Materials, and the Senior Design Project courses. She has served on the University Strategic Planning committee, the Teaching Excellence committee, and has chaired the Engineering Faculty Council.  Currently, she represents the Mechanical Engineering Department on the university E-Learning Committee and chairs the Mechanical Engineering Department Design Committee. Additionally, Dr. Shamamy has developed and led many engineering career guidance programs for high school women and for Junior and Cadet Girl Scouts.

Dr. Shamamy’s contributions to industry include her work in alloy development for nuclear-powered aircraft at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, fuel cell research with United Technologies, tantalum capacitor development at P. R. Mallory and Company, manufacturing optimization at Daimler-Chrysler, and agile manufacturing at General Motors.  She has also served as a consultant to a number of small local engineering firms.  Her publications include an Engineering Materials Lab Manual, peer-reviewed materials science, engineering education, and e-learning papers, and numerous engineering consulting reports.

Dr. Shamamy holds a Professional Engineer license with the state of Michigan.  She is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Society of Women Engineers, and the American Association of University Women.  She is the founder of the LTU Student Section of the Society of Women Engineers and currently serves as its Faculty Advisor.  

She has served on the national Board of Directors of the Society of Women Engineers, has received awards for service to the Society and for significant contributions to engineering education.  Dr. Shamamy has been elected to SWE’s College of Fellows.  Her alma mater, St. Joseph College, recently presented her with the Distinguished Alumna Award.
