Healthcare Systems Concentration

Per Partnership for Michigan's Health, one in every ten jobs in Michigan is now directly related to healthcare. The U.S. Government is emphasizes the use of electronic medical record systems in healthcare1. Intel and GE are collaborating in the healthcare field for the development of healthcare information technology and home health monitoring2 is an example.  Recent trends indicate a significant growth in healthcare-related technologies and systems. Healthcare Systems deal with designing and improving the safety, cost, quality and efficiency of healthcare processes and systems thus transform healthcare delivery systems from  ineffective, reactive, disease focused systems to cost effective, proactive, health and wellness focused systems.

Industrial engineers play a significant role in healthcare systems by helping healthcare facilities improve total quality management, scheduling and sequencing, and operational control.  For example, they may be integral in setting up medical records and optimizing patient turnaround time in emergency rooms. With the ultimate goal being continuous process improvement, industrial engineering research methodology reviews existing workflows, identifies bottlenecks, and proposes solutions and recommendations.  In doing so, they may use a number of tools, such as modeling and simulation applications, problem solving, statistical analysis, operations research, and data mining.

This concentration provides the students with knowledge and skills for effective and efficient modeling, analyzing, and designing healthcare systems. LTU students will have an option to graduate with a Healthcare Systems Concentration by taking a number of electives targeted towards healthcare systems. The following courses are proposed for the Healthcare Systems Concentration:

Online Delivery Option
An online/hybrid option will be available for the proposed MSIE program. The courses will be offered in several modes including on-site, online and augmented. A few courses will be offered onsite only. Augmented courses will be delivered through a mix of:
- On-site delivery mode;
- On-line delivery mode; 
- Local coordination of exams, tutorials, etc.
- On-site visit by Program Director for the purpose of tutorials and execution of quizzes and exams (planned according to needs).
Online courses will utilize LTU's Blackboard learning management system and Wimba collaboration technology.
