Biography
Dr. Joseph Hassan joined the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department at Lawrence Technological University in 2011. He earned a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. degree in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from the University of New Brunswick.
Dr. Hassan previous experience included Joining the Applied Physics Lab (APL) of Johns Hopkins University as a member of the biomedical science department. He has lead the efforts to assess biomechanics of human injury to blast and ballistic events using computational modeling and simulation. Prior to APL, he spent ten years as the head of the Biomechanics & Occupant Safety of the Experimental & Computational Mechanics group of the Chrysler group, he has considerable experience in both computational modeling and experimental test and evaluation of mechanical & biomechanical systems. His experience includes planning and conducting analysis of a number of areas including; Occupant accommodation and protection, Biomechanics of automotive Injury, Injury Risks assessment, Human Body Modeling, Injury biomechanics in Pedestrian impact., Rear Impact and whiplash protection, Effective restraint design., Advanced Dummy assessment and validation and simulation of Occupant protection. His responsibilities also included monitoring university contracts in the area of biomechanics and safety systems, supervise Ph.D. candidates in safety and crash thesis projects and provide direction to different platforms in his areas of expertise and issues related to safety. His group had the responsibility to support the legal efforts in safety matters and provides technical support for government replies to different NHTSA regulations such as 208, 214, 210, 201, 213. Some projects monitors and evaluates new and advanced dummies such as THOR, POLAR II, BioRID, RID III..etc.
Prior to his experience at the Chrysler group, Dr. Hassan was the group Leader of the FCRASH user Support and Training section at Ford Motor Company, responsibility included all aspects of user support for CRASH applications, including, developing training material and organize training classes for first line users; Originator and leader of the implementation of Design Sensitivity Analysis (DSA) in Crash applications. He has Developed formulation, algorithm and application of DSA in nonlinear explicit analysis codes.
