Civil engineering is a high-growth profession.  Indeed, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that over the next several years employment for civil engineers will rise 24%, higher than most engineering disciplines.  A large part of this anticipated spike in job opportunities is likely the result of the poor condition of the country’s infrastructure.  To address this demand, the Civil Engineering program at Lawrence Tech offers a wide breadth of courses in the major civil engineering subdisciplines, providing students with a diverse technical background valuable to employers.  Program course topics include:

Highly-Qualified Faculty/Extensive Industry Practitioner Participation

In order to provide the engineering and construction industry with top-notch civil engineering graduates, Lawrence Tech has established a Department of Civil Engineering with a core group of well-qualified, full-time faculty members experienced in their respective civil engineering subdisciplines.  The adjunct faculty, another important component of the department, is comprised of highly respected practitioners from all areas of industry.  All faculty members provide instruction that adheres to the university’s main approach to education: Theory and Practice. Moreover, the department’s Industry Advisory Board, consisting of owners and principals of engineering firms, construction companies and public agencies, interact with faculty and students on a continual basis.  Students are thus provided with a quality academic experience along with substantial industry input and support. 

Laboratory Facilities

The Civil Engineering laboratories are examples of the importance Lawrence Tech places on the Civil Engineering Program.  For example, the environmental and fire test chambers within the nationally recognized Center for Innovative Materials Research are considered state-of-the-art.  The Structural Testing Center, housing some of the largest testing equipment in the region, provides a high-tech facility for undergraduate and graduate civil engineering students to perform experiments and tests on various structural elements.  Other laboratories, such as Hydraulics/Hydrology and Environmental, feature equipment that is identical to that found in industry-based facilities. 

The Civil Engineering Vision

The American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), the leading industry professional association, formed a committee comprised of engineering experts from around the world whose task was to define the skills and attributes a future civil engineer should possess.  The result was Vision 2025, which describes civil engineers as master planners, stewards of the environment and leaders in shaping public policy on infrastructure issues.  The Department of Civil Engineering, committed to exposing our students to the concepts underpinning Vision 2025, adopted and implemented the ASCE Body of Knowledge 2nd Edition, which sets forth detailed program outcomes for civil engineering students to attain the status of highly-qualified and well-rounded professionals.
