What is Baja SAE®?
Baja SAE®, formerly referred to as Mini-Baja®, consists of three regional competitions that facilitate the use of real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. At the competition each year, Lawrence Technological University engineering students compete against more than 100 teams to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain.
The object of the competition is to provide Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) student members with a challenging project that involves the real-world planning and manufacturing tasks encountered when introducing a new product to the
consumer market.
Teams compete against one another to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. Students must function as a team to not only conceptualize, design, build, test, promote, and race a vehicle within the limits of the rules, but also to generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities. Baja SAE® is one of nine engineering education activities included in the SAE®, Collegiate Design Series. For more than 25 years, the design series has impacted the way colleges and universities prepare students for the engineering profession. In the past more than 1,000 students representing 136 universities throughout the United States and the world participated in Baja SAE® competitions.

Lawrence Tech integrates the engineering senior project with the Baja SAE® competition, resulting in an eight-month period in which to design and build a vehicle. Not all institutions do this. The benefit of this restricted time frame is to reflect real-world deadlines and simulate engineering work situations.
