ELEMENT ONE CARS TALL

Welcome to the Formula Hybrid Team

Formula Hybrid is a Lawrence Technological University student lead alternative energy project participating in the 2009-2010 Formula Hybrid Race Series. Formula Hybrid decided to take their skills to the next level with a Formula style vehicle while still considering fuel economy and keeping advanced systems on board. The team has decided to compete in the series as a fully functional Hybrid vehicle.

The team plans to build a chassis with a modular design. The first year we will use a 250cc dirt bike motor as our power-plant and the following year we will add the capability of interchanging that powerplant with an alternative source, like a fuel cell. The team's goal is to have the first vehicle that can adapt to the economy whether they want to see a Hybrid vehicle using gas or a Hybrid vehicle using a fuel cell.

The team will be building a brand new chassis rather than retrofitting an existing Formula chassis. This will help the team build a lighter vehicle and accommodate the numerous electrical components on board. Our team didn't stop with creating a new chassis the Electrical team will be constructing their system with a modular approach allowing them to troubleshoot an interchange components with ease. They will be creating a virtual differential using two independent drive motors, which will help the team cut weight and add handling. That's not all, the team will also be building their own Battery Management System and using regenerative breaking to capture any energy that would otherwise be wasted.
