What is SafeAssign?
SafeAssign is a plagiarism prevention tool and citation checking tool that is integrated within Blackboard. SafeAssign is designed to help you know if you have properly cited papers by flagging text found in other online sources and it is used to verify original works. Safe Assignments are added in Blackboard by your instructor and are identified from other assignments by the icon displayed (a "green checkmark").
Select the "View/Complete" hyperlink to open the Upload SafeAssignment window
On the Upload SafeAssignment window scroll down and to the right of "Files To Attach" click "Choose File"
Locate the file you want to submit, select (highlight) and click Open.
NOTE IMPORTANT: SafeAssign accepts files in .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, and .html file formats ONLY. Do not upload files in any other formats
If the instructor has set the assignment as a "Final" you will see the option (check box) to include your paper in global database. Draft Safe Assignments do not have this option displayed.
Click Submit to finalize. Once submitted there is a waiting period until the assignment is checked and a Safe Assignment report is generated. Once the report is generated you will be able to view the report by selecting the assignment View/Complete option or view detail in MyGrades area.
How do I review the report generated for my SafeAssign draft assignment?
Once your assignment has been submitted and the report has been generated you can go through the report to review and identify those items that SafeAssign has flagged. The easiest way to do this is to select the Course Tools menu tab and select My Grades icon.
From the My Grades page, click on the Item assignment name to go directly to View SafeAssignment detail page. This page lists the assignment details such as the percent matching, the submission date/time and if the report is available.
Click the green check mark icon below SA report to open the originality report in a new window. NOTE: The window will open in a minimized window. Click on the maximized window option so that you see both the submitted text and the item detail on the right side.
Clicking on the highlighted text will display both your submitted entry and the source that has been identified as a possible match. If the text is a common name or very generic you can possibly ignore the flag. If there are larger blocks of text identified, click the highlighted text to review the source found. Did you paraphrase? Do you need to edit your submission? If not sure or have a questions, cover with the instructor before final submission.
You can also print the report out by selecting the print icon right there at the top of the report so that you can review the report while editing your assignment.
Finally, if you have any questions or you're not really sure how to proceed you should contact your instructor.
