Unit 1 - Objective 4 - Exponent Rules

1. A natural number power a5 = a · a · a · a · a is repeated multiplication.
2. A negative power is a reciprocal.
3. To Multiply the same base a3 · a5 = a3 + 5 = a8 Add exponents.
4. To Divide the same base Subtract exponents.
5. To raise a Power to a Power (a5)3 = a5 · 3 = a15 Multiply exponents.

 

Examples:
  1. 105 · 104 = 105+4 = 10 9
  2. 3 · 32 = 31 · 32 = 31 + 2 = 33 = 3 · 3 · 3 = 27
