Plane Analytical Geometry - Conics
UNIT OBJECTIVE
Be able to recognize the equation of conics: circles, parabola, ellipses and hyperbola;
write the equation of a conic in a standard form; identify a conic from it's equation;
be able to sketch a conic.

METHOD OF EVALUATION
The unit test will be a paper and pencil exam given at your class site. The test will be
administered by the administrator or by a proctor. Please see the course schedule for the
exact date and time of the unit test.
OBJECTIVE ONE
Learn and understand the standard form for the equation of a circle. Be able to write the
equation and pick out the center, radius and sketch.
- Read 21.3 pages 554-557
- Complete work exercises pages 557-558 #1-17 odd, 21-25 odd, 31,37,41.
- Quick review sheet 8-1.
OBJECTIVE TWO
Learn the standard form for a vertical or a horizontal parabola with vertex at the origin
and be able to sketch. Given information about the vertex, focus or directrix, be able to
write the equation of the parabola.
OBJECTIVE THREE
Learn the standard form for the equation of an eclipse with center at the origin. Be able
to sketch the graph. Given information be able to write the equation of the ellipse.
OBJECTIVE FOUR
Learn the standard form for the equation of hyperbola with center at the origin. Be able
to sketch the graph of a hyperbola. Given information be able to write the equation of a
hyperbola.
OBJECTIVE FIVE
Learn the standard form of all conic sections with center or vertex at (h,k). Be able to
write the equation of a conic in a standard form.
