Determinants, Distance formula, Slopes and Equations of lines

UNIT OBJECTIVE
Evaluate determinants using expansion by minors, understand properties of determinants, find the
distance between two points or length of line segment; find the mid-point of aline segment joining
two points; determine the slope of a line; determine the angle of inclination;understand the
relationship between parallel and perpendicular lines; writeline equation giving slope and y-intercept,
point and slope, two points, and point with vertical or horizontal lines.
* All assignment are in basic Technical Mathematics with calculus by Allyn. J. Washington,1995.

METHOD OF EVALUATION
The unit test will be paper and pencil given at your class site. The test will be administered by the
instructor or by a proctor. Please see the course schedule for the exact time and date of the unit test.

OBJECTIVE ONE
Learn how to evaluate 3*3 determinants using expansions by minors.
Read 16.1 pages 416-420.
Complete work exercises, page 421 #1-7 odd, 17-21 odd.

Learn some properties of determinants.

Read 16.2 pages 422-425.

Learn the distance formula and multiple point formula. Learn the formula for slope and the
relationship to angle of inclination. Be able to determine when lines are parallel or perpendicular.
