Unit 4 - Objective 5 - Addition and Subtraction of Radicals
Quick Review

Adding and subtracting radical terms is like adding and subtracting LIKE terms. To be a LIKE term, the expressions under the radical and the root must be exactly the same.
Like adding 2w + 4w = 6w, both of these terms have a w. Both of the former have cube (3rd) roots with a 5 underneath.

If the radicals are not LIKE terms, they can not be combined. The root as well as the expression underneath must be the same to be LIKE terms.

Note:

Simplify all radicals first, then combine LIKE terms.

Example

  1. (like combining 6x - 5y - 4x)
