The LTU Network
What’s the LTU Network?
Virtually all desktop and laptop PCs on the Lawrence Tech campus are connected to the campus network and have Internet access. Some PCs are connected to the network via a network cable while most laptops connect via a wireless network card. Wireless Internet access is available across most of the LTU campus, so you can use your laptop to connect to the LTU Network and the Internet from anywhere on campus.
What do I do with it?
You’ll need to access the LTU network to connect to the Internet, send email, use some of LTU’s licensed software, and print to public printers.
How do I connect to the LTU Network?
Any PC on campus connected via a network cable will automatically connect to the network when the system is booted.
A laptop will connect via a wireless connection when you’re on campus. Your laptop will already be configured to make a wireless connection before you receive it.
Please note: In order to make a wireless connection, you must make sure that wireless connections are enabled on your laptop. If wireless connections are enabled, the wireless indicator light on your laptop should be on. If it is not on, a wireless connection cannot be made. Always make sure that your wireless connection in enabled before trying to make a wireless connection.
Accessing the Internet from off campus
The LTU wireless network covers the campus area but does not extend beyond campus. If you want Internet access from your home or office, you will need to set up access from an Internet Service Provider or ISP, for example Earthlink, Comcast, or AOL. LTU does not provide Internet access to you from off campus.
Using LTU licensed software from on and off campus
Most software applications can be used on and off campus. However there are several applications that are restricted to on campus use only. These applications connect to a licensing authorization server which identifies the user as a valid LTU user.
The following software applications require this licensing authorization and can only be used on campus:
-
ArcGIS
-
Catia v5
-
MatLab & Simulink 2009a
Lawrence Tech’s VPN allows off campus users to run software with restricted on-campus licenses. Please see the instructions for using the VPN in this handbook.
