A Rash, A Nuclear Power Plant and A Rifle Range
By Denise Janus
Will Schumaker made us some tasty venison sausage omelletes for breakfast. Karen Sanborn came down again to help us break down camp and move to a Paradise Acres campground in Oak Harbor, Ohio, about 40 miles east of Toledo. Evidently I'm allergic to something in the woods because the backs of my hands are swollen, and covered with an itchy rash. Will took me to a clinic to get some antibiotics, while the others went to the campground and set up the tents and did interviews with a reporter for the "Oakland Tech News." We received approval from the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant and the Rifle Range to canoe past at 4 p.m.
Will and I pulled up to the marina right behind the Expedition and the canoe. We hit the water at about 3:50 p.m.. You're probably thinking, "why so late." Well, in addition to needing approval to pass the plant and the range, the waves actually were in our favor at that time -- big waves that pushed us right along. We normally paddle about 3.5 mph, but with the waves at our backs we could consistently hold about 4.5 mph. We canoed into Port Clinton and found our boat launch. There were alot of people out at a fair that was right off the Lake. Once off the water we headed out of town to get a taillight for the canoe trailer, and then back to Paradise Acres. Our other team members, Joe Heddy, Joe Wallace, and Chris Jurczak came down. We finished setting up camp in the dark, and then jelled for the rest of the evening, around the campfire.
