Heat and Strokes

by Denise Janus

This morning we broke down camp under another hot sun.  I hate to leave the Port of Vermilion with its beauty and small-town friendliness and charm, but voyageurs we are, and move on we must!   We drove over to our next campsite in Bay Village, Ohio and scouted out boat ramps as well.  After finalizing camp details we backtracked to Lorain, put back in at about 1p.m., and canoed to the Lorain Lighthouse our tour. Thank you to Mickey VanWagner and Alan Pollock our tour guides!

We set back off at about 1:20 p.m. headed for Avon Lake. We had wanted to do about 17 miles today, but some of us seem to be catching a bug so we decided to canoe only 8 miles.  The 90-degree weather coupled with the yesterday’s excitement has us all worn pretty thin.  We were originally set to camp outside of the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center but because of thunderstorms, the general need for air conditioning, and due to some of us not feeling 100 percent, we decided to rest in a hotel.  Tomorrow’s looking like a rest day as well!
