Waves we Couldn't Ride
by Denise Janus

We ventured out onto the water, which turned out to be a bad idea because the waves were so high.  I wasn’t the most attentive last night listening to the weather radio so I wasn’t informed about the Northeast winds! I was thinking, “As long as the weather is nice we’ll have a good paddling day. We HAVE to paddle today to get our 17.5 miles in.”  Well, I never thought we’d have Northeast winds, and from what I’m told, after the fact, they only come around once every 9 or 10 days, which happened to fall on a day when my priorities included making people happy and finishing business. With only 3 paddling days left on the monotonous Lake Erie — which took a month of paddling — I was itching to get it done. We tried to paddle, but weren’t getting very far very fast. While the waves were fun, I had to make the call to turn around and not waste a day on impossible paddling. I learned a lot in those couple of hours, I just hope my team members can forgive my mistake!

We got back to the Harbor and decided to drive over to Cleveland for an Indians game. It was my first baseball game (I know, I live a sheltered life!) and I had a lot of fun. The Indians beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3 to 2!  I can’t wait now to get back to Detroit and get some Tigers games in!
