Cell Phone Overboard
by Denise Janus

We got on the water at about 10 a.m., putting back in at the beach at Fairport. Thank you to Brian Fowler and his students for helping us get the canoe off the trailer! We paddled 12.5 miles and ended up at Madison Township Park, where we were welcomed by a group of kids at a golf camp who have been keeping up with us since they saw us a few weeks ago in the Cleveland Plain Dealer article. You guys are cool!  We love pulling up to an awesome welcoming committee!

It was another hot day so we all jumped ship a few times during our breaks to cool off, let me tell you, the water is fantastic!  Here’s a fact about Lake Erie – it gets all new water every 3 years-and it has the lowest volume of water of all the Great Lakes!

In my haste to jump out of the canoe a few days ago, my cell phone went missing. I know I had it before I jumped in the water, but once I got back in the canoe I noticed it was gone.  Darn it, now my phone IS ON THE BOTTOM OF LAKE ERIE!!!!!! Those of you trying to call, please give me a few days to have a phone sent to me!  At least I don’t have to worry about any unauthorized calls…as long as Nemo doesn’t find my phone. A modern-day inconvenience nothing like the life-threatening situations fur-traders must have dealt with.

As we got off the water, we just barely missed a thunderstorm that actually knocked out power to our lodge while we were canoeing. When we got back to the lodge we each did a bit of running, swimming, and hanging out in the hot tub, which really reenergizes the body.  We regrouped a while later and headed to Pizza Hut and then walked around the town and had some ice cream.  We gotta eat good, tomorrow is a 15.5 mile day!
