Bucking the Waves
by Denise Janus
Last night as we pulled back into East Harbor State Park, we were talking about raccoons and even saw a few of them. When we got to camp and our dining tent we put two and two together to figure out that some raccoons had gotten into our trash. Even they rejected the apples we had thrown out. We locked up all the food, but forgot about the granola bars, of which they ate about a third of what was left. They knocked over a crate of miscellaneous items and I had to laugh because it sounded like they were falling off of our coolers which we stacked for raccoon-proofing! Crazy animals!
Today we hit the water at Marblehead at 8 a.m. and had smooth sailing. Around noon we eyed a little beach and decided to pull up on it, I have to say it really was like a Gilligan’s Island episode! It was a beautiful little beach with a scenic treeline and we stayed for an hour and ate our lunch. We canoed into the Huron River, but before we could make it into the River we had to canoe around a spoil area point which rocked our canoe with huge waves, but boy were they fun! Like I said, we normally do about 3.5 mph but around that point we bucked the waves at only 1.5! Who needs Cedar Point! We pulled into the Huron River, passed a huge freighter unloading probably iron ore, and got off the water at about 3 p.m.; for the day's total of 17 miles.
