Walking the River in Flip Flops
By Denise Janus
Today was a big day, we got in 25 miles when all was said and done. We used just the replica canoe today. Paddling it were Jason, Mike, Chris Naida, Laura, Chris Trunick, and I. We hit quite a few shallow spots which added to our stress because we could hear the canoe being tortured as it hit each rock. But we cautiously went on and eventually had lunch along the banks of the river on a pile of massive boulders, which was really neat. People along the river have commented on the canoe, and have seen us in the paper!
The last few miles of the day revealed some major speed bumps in the way of shallow water. We steered right around an island when we probably should have gone left around it. Who knew that to the right the water was really shallow. We ended up walking with the canoe for half a mile – definitely not fun – especially after we’d canoed about 23 miles! Because I really thought we had passed through all of the shallow water and wouldn’t have to get out of the canoe, I had worn my flip-flops instead of water shoes – a tactical error I won’t soon repeat. (Walking over rocks and through muck in flip-flops is quite arduous, because the flip-flops don’t stay on.
Larry and Joe watched the whole adventure from the bridge where we were going to take out! After that, we just had to go for the record and return to the Boston Garden for a fourth meal. If you ever want to eat there, we can tell you everything on the menu and what is and isn’t good! We relaxed a bit before retiring. We have more miles to log tomorrow.
