The Shallow Alleghany
by Denise Janus

We began our first full day of canoeing the Alleghany. We’re finally able to put the replica canoe back in. Mike, Chris, Laura, Jason, Dr. Vogt, and I paddled the big canoe, while Larry and Tommy were in the little logoed canoe. Based on all of the information we gathered, the river should have been deep enough for our beastly canoe, which turned out not to be the case. We hit a few shallow areas where we had to get out and walk alongside the big canoe! That’s really not much fun -- every time you hit a rock you cringe!  We got through it and put our miles in.  We were famished when we got off the water and needed to find a place to eat. We knew Boston Garden was a sure bet -- so that’s exactly where we headed!  Afterwards we made our way to the Gaslight campsite where we had a nice little camp on a hill.  We did some swimming (because we just can’t get enough of the water!?) and then played volleyball. We prepared a great dinner in our Dutch ovens. We were all pretty somnolent, so we turned in early to be rested for the next long day.
