Dr. Madden teaches general chemistry courses and associated labs, physical chemistry courses and associated labs and polymer chemistry. He joined the Lawrence Tech faculty in 2000 as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, a position he held until 2006. Dr. Madden was born and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and received a Bachelor degree in Chemistry in 1971 from LaSalle College (now University) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University at Pennsylvania, also in Philadelphia. He spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago.
Prior to joining Lawrence Tech, he taught at four other colleges and universities and worked in polymer research at E.I. DuPont des Nemours and Company in Wilimington, Delaware. During summers in college, he worked at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Center in Bruceton, Pennsylvania (now the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center of the U.S. Department of Energy).
Dr. Madden's field of expertise is statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. His research interests include the theory and simulation of liquids, amorphous solids, microporous media and polymers. He has 44 papers in publications ranging from the Journal of Glaciology to the Journal of Chemical Physics.
He is married with two children.
