Mathematics and computer science are closely related fields. Problems in computer science are often formalized and solved with mathematical methods; in fact, the computer industry employs more mathematicians than any other single field. As society becomes increasingly dependent on computers and other means of information processing, the need for people trained in mathematics and computer science is expected to grow exponentially. Because computer technology is embedded in so many products, services, and systems, jobs requiring math and computer science can be found in virtually every industry.
Computing professionals might find themselves in a variety of environments in academia, research, industry, government, private and business organizations—analyzing problems for solutions, formulating and testing, using advanced communications or multimedia equipment, or working in teams for product development.
Within the computer industry, individuals with mathematical and computer science expertise are employed by Internet service providers; Web search portals; and data processing, hosting, and related services firms. Others work for government, manufacturers of computer and electronic products, insurance companies, financial institutions, and universities. Areas in which someone with a degree in math and computer science might find employment also include artificial intelligence, biomedical information systems, computer design and engineering, computer networking, gaming systems, information technology, search engines, systems and software engineering, and computerized package distribution systems.
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science program at Lawrence Technological University is a broad and intensive program that enables you to pursue a wide variety of career paths and offers you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the foundations of mathematics and the relation of these tenets to problem solving in the arena of computer science.
