Mr. Douglass Koch
Professor Koch has been teaching at Lawrence Tech since 1980. His primary teaching interests are in management, human resources, labor relations and organizational behavior. Since his retirement from full time teaching in 2000 he has taught at least one or more sections of University Seminar every academic year. Because of his prior experience in several administrative and support areas at LTU and in industry, he hopes that he is able to impart to new students an understanding of the complexities of college life so that they can be successful here and in their careers.
In his first twenty years at Lawrence Tech he held positions as assistant dean, associate provost, dean of graduate studies, and temporary helping roles in Admissions, the Registrar’s office, and with the Co-op program. During those years he always taught because he enjoys interacting with students. He particularly takes pride in assisting students with academic advising and informal personal counseling. In 1997 Doug was named Administrator of the Year, one of the annual Mary E. and Richard E. Marburger Excellence in Achievement Awards.
Professor Koch taught in the College of Business at Wayne State University for five years before coming to LTU. He has also taught on an adjunct basis at the University of Windsor, Eastern Michigan University, The University of Michigan, and Siena Heights College. Prior to entering academic life in 1972 Doug was an engineer and manager for several engineering and defense industry contractors, primarily in the western U.S. Since 1972 he has done consulting work for the Ford Motor Company, Merrill Lynch, Campbell-Ewald, the Institute for Management Accounting and The Henry Ford. This work primarily involved staffing and human resource planning.
Doug holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, an MBA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and completed course requirements in the doctoral program in the Business School at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a life member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources. He regularly teaches a portion of a professional development program for those seeking certification from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
