ESL0112 Beginning Intensive Grammar
An introduction to basic grammar and beginning English vocabulary emphasizing form, meaning and usage of basic structures. Exercise-intensive class time with regular quizzes, tests, and daily homework assignments. Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0132 Intermediate Intensive Grammar
Study of forms, meaning and usage of intermediate structures of grammar, building on knowledge of basic forms and exploration of intermediate structures. Exercise-intensive class time incorporating some listening, speaking, written practice, regular quizzes and tests, and additional comprehension exercises.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0142 Intermediate Grammar

Introduction to reading comprehension skills and strategies. Vocabulary development and expansion for general purpose reading. Reading expansion includes grammar and discussion. Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0252 Advanced Intensive Reading
Focus on reading proficiency and coordination of discourse skills for comprehension. Composition, visual literacy, advanced vocabulary, analysis and critical reading are emphasized.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

Develop basic speaking skills for general purposes. Conversational techniques and guided group discussions improve vocabulary range and appropriate contexts for speaking situations. Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

Speaking in a variety of classroom settings using appropriate discussion techniques. Pronunciation and accent-reduction for listener comprehension and clarity are emphasized.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0452 Advanced Intensive Conversation
Accuracy in articulation and the individual sound level and the sentential level. Speaking skills for oral presentations are the focus, as well as academic-subject-specific language is emphasized.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0512 Beginning Intensive Writing
General purpose writing skills designed to aid the student in the transitional phase as well as ensure some basic accuracy in necessary life skills. Vocabulary, written clarity, and beginning familiarity with academic laptops for writing are developed. Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0532 Intermediate Intensive Writing
Writing skills and strategies for academic purposes including note-taking, focused writing practice on beginning academic subjects, vocabulary development specific to academic subjects. Sentence structure and paragraph development, organization and coherence, grammar appropriate to beginning academic writing.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0542 Intermediate Writing
Writing skills and strategies for academic purposes including note-taking, focused writing practice on beginning academic subjects, vocabulary development specific to academic subjects. Sentence structure and paragraph development, organization and coherence, grammar appropriate to beginning academic writing.  Lecture 2 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0552 Advanced Intensive Writing
Critical academic analysis, subject-specific vocabulary, and focused practice to reinforce the student’s skills for University-level courses. Continued paragraph development, grammar and spelling accuracy, extensive practice of rhetorical techniques. Thorough knowledge of word processing programs, electronic documents and BlackBoard navigation are required.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0562 Advanced Writing

Introduction to test taking in the academic setting. Emphasis on basic instructions, classroom test etiquette, expectations and manners. Preparedness and test anxiety reduction to aid in student success. Practice basic quiz and test formats in a relaxed setting to develop skills necessary for test taking. Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0622 Beginning Test Prep

Listening includes short conversation identifiers such as speaker, place, context, tag questions and analysis; grammar includes subject and verb identification, progressive tenses, and parallel structure; reading includes skimming, scanning and question-based testing.  Lecture 4 hours. 2 credits.

ESL0642 Intermediate TOEFL Prep
Emphasis on skills specific to the TOEFL and TOEFL-like tests for the categories of listening, grammar and written expression, and reading. ESL0662 Advanced TOEFL Prep
Continues skills of ESL0621 and includes longer conversations and academic talks for the listening portion of the test; higher-level grammar practice, continued subject-and-verb identification, advanced written expression; advanced vocabulary for reading, continued scanning and question-based testing techniques. Practice tests and timed test portions are emphasized.  Lecture 2 hours. 2 credits.
