Master of Architecture - Critical Studies Concentration

This Masters of Architecture degree concentration emphasizes history, theory and criticism. The focus of this concentration is to pursue research and investigation in architecture both as a discipline and a practice with stress on contemporary issues of architectural design. The program includes both conventional academic research as well as more specific architectural research to address issues and ideas intrinsic to the discipline. This approach is grounded in a theoretical position and involves experimentation, testing and risk. The Critical Studies concentration is intended to prepare students to enter the practice of architecture in the twenty first century with a strong background in design skills and design methodology.

There are a total of 36 credit hours in this program (in addition to an acceptable undergraduate degree in architecture).  The thesis requirement is a self-initiated work and is shaped to the research interests of the student. A thesis should embody the result of research that substantiates a critical investigation of architectural design issues. It allows the student to examine architectural issues that influence the design of urban and non-urban environments. It is anticipated that the thesis work will have greater breath and depth than prior academic study and include substantial written documentation of the theoretical position as well as graphic representation of the outcome of the research and design.
