Lawrence Tech students light up Detroit corner

Light Sculpture
Lawrence Tech students designed and built an art installation that provides both a needed source of illumination and a focal point at the corner of Canfield and Cass in Detroit’s midtown section.

A group of sculpture students from Lawrence Technological University lit up the corner of Canfield and Cass in Detroit and also attracted media attention when they designed and constructed a light sculpture that was unveiled for Noel Night on Dec. 7.

Night Light Detroit is the creation of students in Assistant Professor Steve Coy’s sculpture class who called themselves the Larry & Friends Design Group.

The project was made possible by a $5,000 grant from Midtown Detroit Inc., which also arranged for access to the lot.

One goal of the project was to create a new source of illumination in an area where some streetlights are not functional.

Two radio stations – WWJ News Radio 950 and WDET 101.9 FM, Detroit’s public radio station – reported on the light installation.
