Applied Research

Under Dr. Walker’s leadership, the University is making a concerted effort to form government, corporate, and industry partnerships to advance research in leap-ahead technologies, provide applied research opportunities for students and faculty, and contribute to the effort to diversify Michigan’s economy. Recent partnerships include:

• Research funded by Michigan’s 21st Century Jobs Fund to develop, implement, and commercialize new materials and engineering practices in order to double the lifespan of Michigan’s boxbeam highway bridges
• Research testing vehicle performance with various corporations at the Automotive Engineering Institute, which features a unique 4 x 4 chassis dynamometer
• Research conducted with the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center and DRS Technologies to develop a hybrid diesel-electric high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV)
• The study and assessment of DTE Energy’s Hydrogen Technology Park, the first and largest park of its type in the world, developed with support from the U.S. Department of Energy
• Research to develop new materials for the next generation of armor for tanks with the overall objective of reducing the weight of the tanks by 70 percent while providing superior armor protection
• Biomedical research in a variety of areas, including the development of interactive tools for improved assessment of energy balance in collaboration with the Weight Control Program at Beaumont Hospital
