Diversity Seminar History

On October 7, 2003, Juan Williams, best-selling author and Washington Post correspondent spoke to a near-capacity crowd of students, faculty, staff, and local community members at the Ridler Field House. "This is your moment in history...You have the power to touch others, to become political. Put your hands in the muck and mire and make a difference."

This message described the core of the Lawrence Tech Diversity Seminar Series. This series of lectures, performances, art exhibitions, panel discussions, and group activities is designed to expose the Lawrence Tech community to cultures, mindsets, problems, and ideas different to their own, and in so doing help them be prepared and active citizens of the world. Lawrence Tech's Mission also requires this kind of exposure as a way to understand others, and therefore become better leaders.

In 1997 Dr. John Rechutti introduced the Diversity Seminar Series, funded by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council. The Diversity Seminar Series program’s initial purpose was to raise students' consciousness of the cultures in Southeast Michigan. It has developed into a broad set of presentations and performances focused on enhancing the multicultural education of first year students in the required course, University Seminar. The series typically offered six seminars throughout the fall semester of the academic year.

In 1998, Professor Kevin Kelch assumed coordination of the Diversity Seminar Series. Beginning in 2002, the program was sponsored by Huntington Bank. In 2004, Plunkett and Clooney Law Firm joined Huntington Bank in this sponsorship. With this sponsorship, Lawrence Tech was able to mount large-scale diversity presentations known as Diversity Seminar Series Launch Events. Launch presenters have included:

  • Dr. Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to travel on a NASA space shuttle mission. Dr. Jemison spoke to both Lawrence Tech and local high school students about her experience on the space shuttle Endeavor.
  • Juan Williams, National Public Radio program presenter and commentator. Mr. Williams, a correspondent for the Washington Post and author of the best selling book Eyes on the Prize, discussed the modern civil rights movement and inspired students to consider their own role in history as agents of change and justice.
  • Herman Boone, coach of an interracial football team and subject of the film "Remember the Titans." Mr. Boone spoke about the power of teamwork when diverse persons strive towards a common goal.
  • Ward Connerly of the American Civil Rights Institute and Dr. Frank Wu, Dean of Wayne State University Law School. Mr. Connerly and Dr. Wu debated the issue of Affirmative Action.
  • Ron Bachman, an advocate for the disabled and a music industry personality.

As the Diversity Seminar Series has developed over the years, the seminars have been followed by small-group discussion "breakout sessions" in which students talk about the issues presented in each seminar.

In 2006, Dr. Melinda Weinstein assumed coordination of the Diversity Seminar Series.

In 2007, the First Year Programs Office assumed coordination of the Diversity Seminar Series.

All Lawrence Tech students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend the seminars; the presentations are also open to the public.
